Vetting Script

Before

In order to work efficiently on a team, especially one that is remote, communication is key. If the candidate cannot communicate effectively in your organizations chosen language (in this case, English) it is, unfortunately, an immediate disqualifier

  1. Unfortunately, the basic level of English would be not enough for successful work in our company. This position requires fluent English. Best of luck.

  2. We're looking for devs who have a Fluent English level in their profile.

Availability check

Sometimes a candidate applies to your job post on Upwork with the incorrect assumption that they won't have to work 30+ hours a week, and sometimes candidates will apply already having pre-existing responsibilities. Even though we have a specific questions that addresses these that they need to answer, it's better to ask again than not. Feel free to use these phrases to double-check their availability as well as set accountability should they not meet the hourly quota you expect from them each week.

  1. Hey, nice work on the challenge!
By the way, if you have a primary full-time job what are the working hours of that job?

  2. Hi,<NAME>, nice work on the challenge! Quick question before we proceed: Do you have a primary full-time job? If so, what are the working hours of that job?

  3. Sounds like you have a primary job. Can you tell me what your working hours are?

  4. This role requires a developer working between 1pm and 9pm UTC. Lmk if you’re willing to continue.

  5. If you’re sure you can devote that much time to the project we can proceed to the next challenge.

  6. Hi,<NAME>. I'm afraid it would be hard for any person to dedicate 30-40 hours/week to this project having a primary full-time job. Unfortunately, we have to proceed with other candidates.

Negotiation

It is unfortunate when the rate you pay for a position does not meet the expectations of a potential candidate, or that the candidate prefers to use Upwork's Manual Time Tracking feature. However, adjusting pay or payment tracking method should not be something that is up for discussion at this point. Use these phrases below to communicate this to the inquiring candidate.

  1. This position pays $/hr and this is a non-negotiable rate. Let me know if you’re willing to continue.

  2. Sorry. I understand your concern, but this position pays $/hr and this is a non-negotiable rate.

  3. Everyone on the team that you would be joining has solved this challenge in under 5 hours.

  4. I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, there is no way to track your time other than using Upwork app.

  5. I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, the manual time is not allowed.
